Return to player is the theoretical percentage of wagered money a game pays back over a very large number of rounds. A game at 96% returns $96 for every $100 staked in the long run, and keeps $4. That $4 is the house edge, and it is the single most useful number on any casino game.

It is also one tap away in the game's information panel, and routinely unread.

What the number does to a session

Expected cost is turnover multiplied by the edge. Both terms are visible before a single bet is placed, which makes this the one calculation worth doing in advance.

The gap between the top and bottom rows is a factor of six, available for free before anything is staked. That is a larger effect than any strategy, any staking pattern and any bonus on offer.

Why the same game title varies

This is the detail that catches people out, and it is worth stating plainly: a single slot title is often licensed in several configurations, and the operator chooses which one to run.

The same name, the same artwork and the same bonus features can appear at 96% on one platform and several points lower on another. Neither is misconfigured; both are legitimate versions of the game.

The consequence is that a return figure quoted in a review of the game elsewhere tells you nothing about the copy in front of you. The figure that applies is the one in the information panel on the platform you are actually playing, and checking it takes one tap.

The multiplier nobody counts

Turnover is stake multiplied by number of bets, so the rate of play matters exactly as much as the stake does. The same $1 bet at 600 spins an hour costs twice what it costs at 300.

Turbo modes, autoplay and quick-spin settings all move down that table without changing anything a player would describe as their bet. It is the least noticed cost multiplier in the interface, and turning it off is a single setting.

What the figure does not tell you

Three things, and all three matter for choosing a game.

  • How the return is distributed. Two games at 96% can feel completely different: one paying small amounts often, the other paying rarely and large. That is volatility, and it is a separate dimension entirely.
  • What happens in your session. The figure describes millions of rounds. Over a few hundred spins, results scatter widely on both sides of it, which is why a winning session is unremarkable rather than evidence of anything.
  • Whether a bonus makes it cheaper. It does not. A bonus adds turnover with its own expected cost, calculated the same way — the wagering guide runs the comparison.

A note on published figures generally. Percentages above roughly 97% exist but are uncommon, and they are usually attached to games with very high volatility or restricted bonus eligibility. Any page listing a slate of games at 99% without naming the configuration or the platform is repeating a figure it did not check — which is exactly the problem this site tries not to reproduce.

How to check, in order

  1. Open the game's information panel and read the stated return percentage.
  2. Check the volatility indication in the same panel if there is one.
  3. Turn off turbo and autoplay before the first spin.
  4. If a bonus is active, check the game's weighting toward the wagering requirement — a title contributing 20% needs five times the turnover.

Four checks, under a minute, and together they have a larger effect on the cost of an hour's play than anything else available. Table games work on the same arithmetic with different numbers, and the live floor changes the pace rather than the edge.
